Internal Family Systems Therapy
Discover healing through compassionate exploration of your inner world. Transform your relationship with all parts of yourself.
The Power of Parts Work
Internal Family Systems (IFS) was developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s and has become one of the most transformative approaches in modern psychotherapy. IFS recognizes that the mind is naturally multiple—we all have different "parts" or subpersonalities that developed to help us navigate life's challenges.
Rather than pathologizing these parts, IFS approaches them with curiosity and compassion. Every part, even those that cause problems like addiction, self-criticism, or anxiety, originally developed to protect us. When we understand and appreciate their positive intentions, transformation becomes possible.
At the core of IFS is the concept of "Self"—your true essence that is inherently calm, curious, compassionate, and capable of healing. The goal of IFS therapy is to help you access Self-energy and lead your internal system from this centered place, rather than being hijacked by extreme parts.
At Algarve Wellness Retreats, our IFS-trained therapists guide you through deep exploration of your internal system. In our intensive residential setting, you can do the profound work of healing wounded parts while supported by our therapeutic community and the restorative beauty of the Portuguese coast.
Understanding Your Parts
Managers
Protective parts that try to keep us safe by controlling situations, people-pleasing, or achieving
Exiles
Wounded parts carrying pain, shame, and trauma that other parts work to keep hidden
Firefighters
Emergency response parts that react impulsively when exiles threaten to overwhelm
Self
Your core essence—calm, curious, compassionate, and capable of healing all parts
Benefits of IFS Therapy
Conditions We Treat
IFS is effective for a wide range of conditions because it addresses the underlying parts dynamics that create symptoms.

Develop relationships with protective parts (managers and firefighters) to understand their roles and concerns
Access Self-Energy
Learn to distinguish Self from parts and cultivate the calm, curious, compassionate qualities of Self
Witness & Unburden Exiles
With protector permission, safely connect with wounded parts to witness their pain and release burdens

A Compassionate Approach
IFS offers a fundamentally compassionate view of human psychology. Instead of seeing symptoms as problems to eliminate, IFS views them as parts that are trying to help in the only way they know how.
This non-pathologizing approach often creates profound shifts in self-relationship, moving from self-criticism to self-compassion, from internal warfare to inner harmony.
