Motivational Interviewing
Discover your own reasons for change through collaborative conversations that strengthen motivation and commitment to lasting transformation.
The Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) was developed by psychologists William Miller and Stephen Rollnick in the 1980s. It emerged from the recognition that confrontational approaches to addiction and behavior change often backfire, increasing resistance rather than motivation.
MI is based on a simple but powerful insight: people are more likely to change when they articulate their own reasons for doing so. Rather than telling clients why they should change, MI therapists help them explore their own ambivalence and discover their intrinsic motivation.
The approach is collaborative, not prescriptive. It respects autonomy, evokes the client's own wisdom, and creates a non-judgmental space for honest exploration. This spirit of partnership often produces breakthroughs that directive approaches cannot achieve.
At Algarve Wellness Retreats, MI principles are integrated throughout our treatment approach. From initial assessment to discharge planning, our therapists use MI techniques to support your motivation and help you connect with your deepest values and goals.
