Systemic Family Therapy
Heal your family system, transform relationships, and break generational patterns through expert family therapy in a supportive setting.
Understanding Family Systems
Systemic Family Therapy emerged from the family therapy movement of the 1950s and 60s, pioneered by therapists like Murray Bowen, Salvador Minuchin, and Virginia Satir. These visionaries recognized that individual problems often reflect dynamics within the larger family system.
Rather than viewing one person as the "problem," systemic therapy examines how family members interact, communicate, and influence each other. Symptoms in one person often serve a function in the family system—maintaining balance or expressing what cannot be said directly.
This approach also recognizes that patterns are passed down through generations. The way your parents related to each other, and how their parents related, shapes your own relationship patterns today. Understanding these multigenerational patterns is key to changing them.
At Algarve Wellness Retreats, our family therapists help families understand their unique system, identify unhealthy patterns, and develop new ways of relating. Whether the whole family attends or we work with individuals, we consider the broader system in all our work.
